The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate's Court today (12) ordered police to expedite further investigations into the death of former Assistant Director of the External Resources Department of the Ministry of Finance, Ranga Rajapaksa, and submit a comprehensive report to the court.
Accordingly, Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Mihil Chiranthana Satharasinghe postponed the pronouncement of the verdict related to the magisterial inquiry into the death until July 31, 2026.
At the time of his death, Rajapaksha had been suspended from service after being implicated in an incident involving the alleged transfer of USD 2.5 million belonging to the Ministry of Finance to a third party.
An investigation was launched after hackers allegedly breached the finance ministry's computer systems and stole USD 2.5m, officials announced.
The funds were part of a bilateral debt repayment to Australia - with a settlement due in September 2025.
