‘Red’ advisory issued for strong winds and rough seas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ level advisory for strong winds and rough seas for sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar.

 

According to the Met. Department, sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times, with strong gusty winds of up to 60–70 kmph.

 

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice.

 

Sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai via Mullaittivu, and from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, will be rough at times with strong gusty winds of up to 50–60 kmph.

 

Fishing and naval communities engaged in activities in these sea areas are advised to remain vigilant regarding the situation.

 

The wave height may increase to about 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, it said.

 

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities have been requested to pay close attention to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology.
