Traffic restricted to single lane on Hatton–Nuwara Eliya main road

Traffic movement along the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya main road near the Kotagala Pathana Junction has been restricted to a single lane due to the risk of several eucalyptus trees collapsing onto the roadway from a landslide-prone area.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) implemented the restriction yesterday (14) after assessing the potential threat posed to the main road.

According to local residents, the roots of several eucalyptus trees located on the hilltop above the landslide site have become exposed, creating an imminent risk of the trees toppling onto the road amid the strong winds and adverse weather conditions currently affecting the area.

Commuters stated that although the Disaster Management Centre has been informed about the hazardous situation and requested to remove the dangerous trees, a permanent solution has yet to be provided.

Residents further warned that the collapse of the trees could pose a serious threat to commuters and vehicles travelling along the road, potentially resulting in injuries and significant property damage.
