Catholic Church denies Cardinal requested appointments of Ravi Seneviratne and Shani Abeysekara

The Catholic Church has clarified that Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith did not request the appointment of the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne or the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Shani Abeysekara to their current positions.

The statement was made by Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, the Media Spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Colombo, during a press briefing held today (17), in response to questions raised regarding remarks made in Parliament by Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

He stated that neither Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith nor the Catholic Church had ever made any such request for the appointments of the two officials.

Commenting on a reported petition filed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seeking a court order preventing his arrest, Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said it was within his legal rights and that the public must await the court’s ruling.

He also alleged that false information and defamatory claims are being circulated with the intention of obstructing ongoing investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks, urging the public not to be misled by unverified social media content.
