Arrangements have been made to import 104 new Metro buses to Sri Lanka in August as part of efforts to upgrade the country’s public transport service to a more efficient and higher-quality standard.
The buses are to be imported from FOTON International Corporation, a leading commercial vehicle manufacturing company in China.
A delegation of Sri Lankan officials, including the Chief Executive Officer of Lanka Metro Transit, have recently visited the FOTON factory in China to inspect the technical specifications of the buses and study their further modifications required to suit the Sri Lankan road system.
During the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to comprehensively study the company’s production history, the operation of Metro bus services in China and the functioning of the Metro bus processing system.
The official agreement for the importation of the new metro buses to the country was signed on May 18, 2026, and under the agreement, all 104 buses are scheduled to arrive in the country by August, 2026.
Meanwhile, the construction of new Metro service depots in Kadawatha and Ratmalana in the Western Province has also been expedited in preparation for the new bus services.
