More details have emerged regarding a heated confrontation that occurred when a team of police officers from the Avissawella Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau attempted to search a house located on Noori Road in Deraniyagala.
According to police, the officers came under attack while carrying out an operation to arrest a group of suspected drug dealers.
Four police officers had sustained injuries during the incident and were admitted to hospital for treatment. Police Media Spokesman's Office stated that the suspects involved in the assault are also receiving treatment under police custody.
The raid had been conducted following an anonymous complaint alleging that drug trafficking activities were taking place at the residence.
During the operation, police arrested four young men who were allegedly found at the house in possession of narcotics.
The suspects, however, claimed that they were not in possession of any drugs and accused the police of assaulting them.
Subsequently, a group of youths allegedly had threatened a police officer who was in civilian clothing, demanding the release of two of the arrested suspects.
Police said that after the officer had removed the handcuffs from one of the suspects, the group allegedly had chased and assaulted him.
Reports also indicate that one of the youths behaved aggressively, claiming that a police officer’s wallet contained a quantity of the drug known as "Ice" (crystal methamphetamine).
Following the incident, the suspects who had initially been arrested were released, while the wallet in question was handed over to the Deraniyagala Police for further investigation.
Later, the four youths were admitted to the Deraniyagala Hospital, where they were subsequently arrested by police in connection with the alleged drug trafficking activities.
Meanwhile, the four police officers who were assaulted by the suspects were admitted to the Avissawella Hospital for treatment.
Police have launched a special investigation into the incident.
