The government is considering introducing taxes on online betting activities in the near future, according to Deputy Minister of Industries Chathuranga Abeysinghe.
The Deputy Minister noted that the tax would be introduced after the sector is properly regulated.
A Bill aimed at regulating Sri Lanka’s gambling industry was introduced last year, under which a regulatory authority is expected to be established and the necessary rules and regulations implemented.
The Deputy Minister made the remarks in a statement shared via his social media account while addressing the country’s current taxation framework.
Meanwhile, he also noted that the government plans to reduce indirect taxes on essential goods in the future.
