The operation was carried out under the National Programme for Ensuring Safe and Efficient Public Transport, implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.
The screening was organized by the National Transport Medical Institute, with urine samples collected from drivers and conductors attached to Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority bus services.
Samples from 200 individuals were tested between 9:00 a.m. and noon, of whom 13 were found to have used illicit drugs, the Ministry noted.
According to the Transport Ministry, a total of 4,322 drivers and conductors have undergone mobile drug screening between January 2026 and June 12. Of these, 226 individuals were found to have used one or more substances including crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’), heroin and cannabis.
