The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has suspended the party membership and all positions held by its Horana Constituency Organiser, Charith Abeysinghe, with immediate effect following his arrest and remand in connection with an alleged bribery incident.
In a statement issued by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, the party said the decision was taken after Abeysinghe was remanded on June 25 over an alleged bribery incident dating back to 2023.
The SJB further clarified that at the time the alleged offence was committed in 2023, Abeysinghe was neither a member nor an organiser of the party and did not hold any position within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
The party reiterated that it would not hesitate to support the enforcement of the law against individuals involved in corruption or other unlawful activities and affirmed that it does not oppose legal action being taken against such persons.
