The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has decided to conduct a public consultation on the government’s proposal to extend the retirement age of judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

According to the BASL, the programme is scheduled to take place on July 4, 2026.

The decision was reached during a recent meeting of the BASL Executive Committee, convened to discuss the government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges.

During the meeting, the committee also resolved to submit a written request to the President urging that the proposal not be implemented. It was further proposed that public opinions be gathered on the matter.

Accordingly, the public consultation is expected to be held following the BASL General Meeting on July 4, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Association has also decided to convene a special general meeting to discuss the proposed extension of the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges.

Reports indicate that the association’s Executive Council has scheduled the special meeting for July 11, 2026.
