Former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, alias 'Pillayan', has been remanded until July 13 in connection with ongoing investigations into five murders that took place in several areas of the Eastern Province in 2008.
The order was issued when the case was taken up before the Batticaloa Magistrate's Court today (30).
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had informed the court on June 15 regarding the progress of investigations into the killings, which had occurred in 2008.
During the previous hearing, the Batticaloa Magistrate directed the Superintendent of the Welikada Prison to produce 'Pillayan' before the court, as he has been named the third suspect in the murder case.
Accordingly, 'Pillayan' was produced before the court this morning (30), while security in and around the court premises was significantly tightened.
