Dengue hyper-epidemic still not under control, PHI Union says

The Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Union of Sri Lanka states that the dengue hyper-epidemic situation has not yet been brought under control.

Its Acting President, Upul Rohana, stated that while the epidemic situation is currently being brought under control to some extent in areas where it was initially reported, dengue outbreaks are now being reported in new areas.

Accordingly, Upul Rohana urged the public to ensure that the current level of engagement in dengue prevention efforts is not reduced under any circumstances.

He further noted that light showers have commenced in certain areas under prevailing weather conditions, and consequently, there is a risk that mosquito density—which is already high—could increase further.

He also pointed out that unoccupied houses have become a major obstacle to controlling dengue.

He emphasized that premises where owners have gone abroad, as well as urban lands or houses that have been purchased but left uninhabited, have now become a significant concern in dengue prevention efforts.
