Several inmates transferred from Negombo Prison following deadly unrest

A group of inmates from the Negombo Prison has been transferred to the Bogambara Open Prison in Pallekele following the deadly unrest that erupted at the facility, authorities said.
The transfer was carried out after clashes between two groups of inmates, which began on Sunday (05), escalated this morning, prompting prison authorities to relocate a number of prisoners.
Police said the violence involved remand prisoners and convicted inmates housed at the prison.
Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara said the death toll from the incident had risen to 26, including seven prison officers.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident while additional security measures remain in place at the prison.
