Police have detected 100 passenger transport buses allegedly operating on kerosene instead of diesel following a series of complaints received from the public, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Control and Road Safety W.P.J. Senadheera said.

Addressing a media briefing today (17), the DIG said that all police stations across the country had been instructed to launch a special operation after receiving multiple complaints that buses used for passenger transport were being operated using kerosene instead of diesel.

As a result of the operation, information on 100 such buses was uncovered, he said.

DIG Senadheera stated that investigations have been launched and the necessary legal action has been initiated, including the filing of court cases against the relevant buses.

He further said that fuel samples obtained from several other buses had been sent to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) for analysis, adding that legal action would also be taken against those vehicles based on the findings.

The DIG noted that operations to detect buses operating on kerosene would continue, adding that all police stations have been instructed to remain vigilant and take appropriate legal action against offenders.

He also urged fuel station owners to be alert if individuals attempt to purchase kerosene in unusual quantities using containers, and advised them not to supply kerosene for use in buses.
