
A 54-year-old Angolan woman has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country by concealing the narcotic inside her body.
The suspect arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on July 17 aboard Qatar Airways flight QR654, travelling from Angola via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Doha. She was reportedly travelling in a wheelchair upon arrival.
According to Customs, the suspect voluntarily surrendered 14 capsules containing cocaine that had been concealed internally. She also admitted to investigators that she had swallowed additional capsules containing the narcotic.
Further investigations revealed that the recovered capsules contained 237 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of approximately Rs. 10 million.
The suspect and the seized narcotics have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations. Authorities are also taking steps to recover any remaining capsules believed to be concealed inside her body.
