Dengue claims three more lives as death toll reaches 56 in Sri Lanka

Three dengue-related deaths have been reported during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities attributed to the disease this year to 56.

 

According to the latest report issued by the National Dengue Control Unit, more than 77,000 dengue cases have been reported across the country so far this year.

 

A total of 984 new cases were reported yesterday (20).

 

Data released by the NDCU indicate that 162 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across the island continue to be classified as high-risk areas for dengue transmission.

 

The country has witnessed a sharp increase in dengue infections over the past few months, with 8,590 cases reported in May, 21,537 in June, and a further 21,650 cases recorded during the first 20 days of July alone.

 

The case fatality rate currently stands at 0.07%.

 

The Western Province has recorded the highest number of dengue cases, accounting for 40,573 infections or 52.67% of the national total.

 

The Southern Province has reported 11,867 cases (15.41%), followed by the Central Province with 6,492 cases (8.43%).

 

At the district level, Gampaha has recorded the highest number of cases, with 16,164 infections reported so far this year. Colombo District follows with 15,314 reported cases.
