Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government’s decision to increase the retirement age of judges is aimed at expediting the resolution of cases currently pending before courts.

Speaking at a press conference held today (21) to announce Cabinet decisions, the Minister said the government expects the move to help strengthen public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Minister Dr. Jayatissa said discussions regarding increasing the retirement age of judges have been ongoing for some time, noting that a parliamentary committee appointed about a year ago had also received proposals on the matter.

He stated that similar requests have emerged from various sectors, including nursing and administrative services, where professional groups and individuals have called for extensions to the retirement age.

The Minister said the government’s policy programme emphasizes the need to conclude pending court cases and ensure that the public receives maximum benefit from the judicial system.

He further stated that measures are also being taken to recruit additional judges, while a proposal has been submitted to increase the retirement age of judicial officers, including Supreme Court judges, the Chief Justice, and magistrates.

According to Minister Jayatissa, the primary objective of the proposal is to reduce the backlog of cases, provide greater relief and convenience to the public, and enhance trust in the judiciary and the legal system.
