A revenue inspector attached to the sub-office of the Kotikawatta–Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over an alleged bribery incident.

According to the complaint filed with the Bribery Commission, the complainant had purchased a house in 2018 and had been residing there since then. Officials from the Kotikawatta–Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha had visited the property and informed the complainant that assessment tax payments would have to be made separately for the upper and lower floors of the house.

Following the instructions of the officials, the complainant prepared and submitted the required documents. Subsequently, a revenue inspector from the Kotikawatta–Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha visited the house and inspected the property.

The inspector allegedly informed the complainant that there were issues with the building plan and the property assessment, and requested a bribe of Rs. 25,000 to resolve the matter and facilitate the registration of assessment tax payments under the complainant’s name.

The suspect was arrested by CIABOC officers while allegedly accepting the bribe money.

The arrested officer is due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (22).
