The 769th Esala Perahera of the historic Sri Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in Devinuwara will commence today (23) and continue until August 5 amid heightened security.

The annual pageant will begin with the traditional Kapa planting ceremony, marking the start of the religious festivities in keeping with longstanding customs and rituals. The celebrations will conclude with the Randoli Perahera.

The Devinuwara Devalaya, also known as the Uthpalawanna Devalaya, is one of Sri Lanka's most revered shrines. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Dappula Sen and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is traditionally identified with the deity Upulvan in Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition.

A distinctive feature of the Devinuwara Esala Perahera is its strong emphasis on traditional low-country dance performances, including several female dance troupes.

This year's pageant has attracted heightened attention following recent security incidents in the area.

Police are investigating a shooting near the Devalaya earlier this week, which they believe may be linked to a dispute between organized criminal groups. Authorities are also probing alleged threats made in connection with the organization of the procession.

In view of the security concerns, police have deployed nearly 500 officers to provide security throughout the duration of the pageant.

Authorities said the additional security measures are intended to ensure the safety of devotees, participants and visitors attending the annual religious festival.
