The Supreme Court has ruled that former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) for the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon and former Officer-in-Charge of the Colombo North Special Investigation Unit Nalin Sriyantha violated the fundamental rights of a social activist through his arrest and detention during the 2022 Aragalaya protests period.
The determination was made after the Supreme Court heard a fundamental rights petition filed by social activist Anuruddha Bandara.
Court held that the actions of Deshabandu Tennakoon and Nalin Sriyantha in arresting and detaining Bandara amounted to an infringement of his constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights.
