Sajith brings opposition leaders together for key discussions

Leaders of several opposition political parties are scheduled to meet at the Office of the Opposition Leader this afternoon (23) for a special discussion focusing on the independence of the judiciary and other current political developments.

 

The meeting, convened by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is expected to be attended by several senior opposition figures, including former Presidents Ranil Wickremesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena, Sarvajana Balaya leader and Parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) national organiser and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and United Republic Front leader Patali Champika Ranawaka.

 

According to political sources, the government’s proposal to extend the retirement age of judges and concerns regarding the independence of the judiciary are expected to be the main issues discussed. Several other current political matters are also expected to be taken up during the meeting.

 

The meeting is being held amid efforts by opposition parties to strengthen cooperation on matters of national importance and is expected to provide a platform for leaders from different political groups to exchange views.

 

The outcome of the discussions and any decisions reached are expected to be announced after the meeting concludes.
