The Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Dr. Upali Pannila has stated that the government has allocated Rs. 44 billion for the National Housing Development Programme.

The Minister made the announcement while handing over a house built under the "A Comfortable House - An Empowered Family” “Ran Vimana" housing scheme to a homeless Aswesuma beneficiary family in the Pelanwatta West Grama Niladhari Division of the Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) in the Colombo District today (06).

Dr. Pannila said, under the National Housing Programme, the government plans to provide houses to 30,000 low-income families who have lost their homes this year.

He noted that the National Housing Project is being implemented jointly by line ministries, including the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, and the Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure.

The Minister added that the Department of Samurdhi Development alone expects to construct over 1,000 houses this year, with a target of building at least three houses in every Divisional Secretariat Division across the island.

He further stressed that the initiative is not merely a housing programme, but also a social programme aimed at building a family unit full of love, compassion and unity with the support of neighbors, relatives and government officials.
