
The Prisons Department says that full control of both the Kuruwita and Pallansena prisons has now been restored and brought under its authority.
The Department stated that the unrest reported at the Kuruwita Prison and the Pallansena Open-Air Correctional Centre in Dalupotha, Negombo, this morning (07) has been brought under control.
Thirteen inmates from the Kuruwita Prison were admitted to hospital following the incident, while two inmates died.
A tense situation also arose at the Pallansena Prison, where tear gas was later fired to bring the situation under control.
Police, the Special Task Force (STF), the Police Riot Control Unit, the Sri Lanka Army, and the Air Force were deployed to assist in restoring order at both facilities.
The Prisons Department further stated that security at both prisons has been strengthened following the incidents.
