A special meeting to review the current situation in Sri Lanka's prisons and the measures taken to ensure the safety of inmates was held today (07) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on additional measures required to strengthen the safety and security of inmates across all 33 prisons in the country.
A decision was also taken to establish a joint mechanism to assess the issues faced by inmates, oversee their welfare, and coordinate the appropriate response during emergency situations.
Accordingly, a joint mechanism comprising prison officials, the Police, the Special Task Force (STF), and, where necessary, the Tri-Forces, will be established next week to cover all 33 prisons. The mechanism is also expected to engage in further discussions with prison inmates.
