Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera stated that the salaries of Members of Parliament have not been increased, but a certain increase has occurred due to the adjustment of the fuel allowance in line with current market prices.
Speaking in Parliament today (07), the Deputy Minister said that the Government had revised the fuel allowance provided to public officials who are entitled to such benefits, following improvements in the country’s economic situation.
“The salaries of MPs have not been increased in any way. However, the fuel allowance provided to government officials entitled to this benefit was adjusted according to current fuel prices. The Government made this decision as the economic situation improved,” he said.
He further noted that all government officials receiving fuel allowances have experienced a certain increase in their benefits, and that this adjustment may have resulted in a similar increase for Members of Parliament as well.
