Chemmani mass grave: Human remains of over 500 persons excavated from single site for first time

Human skeletal remains belonging to 501 individuals have been excavated from the mass grave located near the Siththupaththu Cemetery in Chemmani, Jaffna.
According to former Senior Professor of History at the University of Jaffna, Paramu Pushparatnam, this marks the first instance in Sri Lanka in which human skeletal remains belonging to more than 500 individuals have been exhumed from a single site.
The Professor stated that the recovery of human remains belonging to more than 500 individuals from a single mass grave had never previously been recorded in the country.
The 46th day of Phase 6 of the excavation of the Chemmani mass grave was conducted yesterday (07) under the supervision of Jaffna Magistrate S. Lenin Kumar.
