Sri Lanka Police stated that the groups responsible for initiating clashes at the Kuruwita, Pallansena, and New Magazine prisons, where incidents of unrest were reported recently, have been identified.
The Department of Prisons stated that necessary measures are being taken, including transferring the identified inmates to other prisons.
Clashes broke out at the Kuruwita, Pallansena, and New Magazine prisons on August 6 and 7.
Three inmates lost their lives in the incidents, while 54 others sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, a tense situation had reportedly arisen at Kuruwita Prison following the destruction of prison cell roofs by inmates during yesterday's (07) unrest.
The damage has created a problem, as frequent rainfall in the area makes it difficult to accommodate inmates in the affected cells.
Accordingly, investigations were conducted at the prison today (08) under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Ratnapura Division, Renuka Jayasundara. Security at the prison has also been strengthened.
Police stated that two inmates died during the unrest and that their bodies bore gunshot wounds.
The Department of Prisons also stated that visitation at the facility remains temporarily suspended.
