The rainy weather conditions currently affecting the southwestern parts of the island are expected to gradually ease after August 15, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Meteorologist Srimal Herath said the rainy conditions prevailing in the southwest are likely to continue in a similar pattern over the next few days, with a gradual reduction in rainfall expected after August 15.
Meanwhile, Herath warned that the El Niño conditions currently affecting Sri Lanka could persist until the Northeast Monsoon season next year.
He said this could have a greater impact on areas that are currently experiencing dry weather.
Herath also noted that prolonged dry conditions could cause wind speeds to decrease in the coming days. Combined with increased humidity, this could lead to a rise in the temperature felt by the human body, increasing the heat index.
Meanwhile, he noted that the Met. Department will continue to monitor the prevailing weather conditions across the island.
