The Cabinet of Ministers has approved Rs. 1.0675 billion in equity capital for Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited to expand and strengthen its urban public transport operations.

Lanka Metro Transit, a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Transport Board, was incorporated in October 2025 to support the modernization of public transportation in Sri Lanka.

The company currently operates a Colombo urban transport pilot service with 10 low-floor buses purchased under the Clean Sri Lanka programme. The government says the pilot has demonstrated both commercial viability and public acceptance.

The company plans to add 112 more low-floor buses from September, prompting the need for additional transport infrastructure.

The approved funding includes Rs. 800 million in 2026 for infrastructure development and Rs. 267.5 million in 2027 to support operational activities.

The funds will be used to develop a fully equipped central workshop in Ekala, establish modern bus depots in Thalangama, Kadawatha, Ratmalana and Homagama, and improve internal roads and bus parking facilities.

The Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, with the investment aimed at enabling Lanka Metro Transit to expand modern public transport services in the Colombo urban area.
