An increase in intestinal-related disorders is being observed among adolescents and young people in Sri Lanka, according to Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist Dr. Supun Kulathunga.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Kulathunga said the growing preference among young people for processed and artificial foods could be contributing to the situation.

He explained that there is a complex connection between the brain and the intestines, known as the gut-brain axis, through which stress and anxiety can affect the digestive system.

According to Dr. Kulathunga, the combination of psychological stress, changing lifestyles and unhealthy dietary habits can contribute to the development of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

He said IBS is becoming increasingly common as eating habits change, with many young people moving away from natural foods such as vegetables, fruits, leafy greens and grains and turning increasingly to processed foods because of their convenience.

Dr. Kulathunga therefore urged greater attention to healthy dietary habits, noting that the shift away from natural foods could be contributing to the increasing prevalence of intestinal disorders among young people.
