Two private buses travelling from Kandy to Hatton collided in the Peragolla area of Ginigathhena, after their drivers allegedly attempted to overtake each other recklessly, police said.

No passengers were injured in the accident, but both buses sustained damage.

Police took the two buses into custody and ordered the drivers to appear before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (17).

Legal action is being taken against the drivers over allegations of excessive speed and reckless and negligent driving.

Police said the drivers had also disregarded warnings about hazardous road conditions caused by intermittent heavy rain in the western slopes of the central hills.

Heavy showers have left roads slippery and increased the risk of landslides, prompting authorities to urge motorists to reduce speed and exercise extra caution when travelling through the area.
