Sri Lanka has expressed solidarity with Indonesia following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that struck off the coast of Flores Island.

The death toll has risen to at least 51, while more than 100 people have reportedly been injured and thousands displaced. Rescue operations are continuing amid landslides, blocked roads and disruptions to communication networks.

The earthquake struck at a depth of around 10 kilometres and was followed by more than 235 aftershocks. A temporary tsunami warning was also issued following the main earthquake before being lifted.

Rescue teams are focusing their efforts on the three worst-affected regencies of Manggarai, East Manggarai and Nagekeo, where access remains difficult due to damaged infrastructure and blocked roads.

Around 5,000 people are currently staying in temporary shelters, while relief teams are working to provide essential supplies and restore electricity and communication services.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath has expressed his condolences to the Indonesian Government and people.

In a post on X, Herath extended his sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

He also expressed concern for those still missing and their families.

Minister Herath commended the efforts of Indonesian authorities, rescue teams, humanitarian workers and others involved in the ongoing search, rescue and relief operations.

He said Sri Lanka stands in solidarity with Indonesia during the difficult period.
