
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Range W.P.J. Senadheera says that since the beginning of the year, a total of 1,654 fatal road accidents have been reported as of yesterday (20), claiming the lives of 1,749 persons.
He said 4,556 people had been hospitalised following major road accidents, while 7,295 people had received treatment for injuries sustained in minor accidents. A further 3,232 accidents involving property damage had also been reported.
According to the DIG, those killed in road accidents included 576 pedestrians, 617 motorcyclists, 122 pillion riders, 119 cyclists, 139 drivers and 173 passengers.
