A house located on Lesley Ranagala Mawatha in Borella has been targeted in a grenade attack this morning (23), according to police.
The attack was reportedly aimed at the residence of an associate of an organized crime gang member known as “Wanathe Chathu,” who was recently arrested in Dubai.
Police said the grenade thrown at the house did not explode, and no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident so far.
CCTV Captures Suspect
The incident occurred during the morning hours, police said with CCTV footage from a nearby camera reportedly capturing a person arriving at the location on a motorcycle and throwing the grenade at the house.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the CCTV footage and other available evidence to identify the suspect.
Security has also been strengthened in the surrounding area following the attack.
Growing Concern Over Grenade Attacks
Security authorities have raised concerns over what they describe as an emerging trend of grenade attacks linked to disputes among members of organized criminal groups.
A similar incident was reported recently on Sri Gnanendra Mawatha in Ratmalana, where a house was targeted in a grenade attack. One of the grenades exploded in that incident.
Police are continuing investigations to determine the motive behind the Borella attack and establish whether it is connected to ongoing conflicts involving organized criminal groups.
