Four individuals have been killed in separate road accidents reported in several parts of the country within the past 24 hours.

 

The accidents had occurred yesterday (23) in the police divisions of Uhana, Nuwara Eliya, Weerambugedara and Habaraduwa.

 

In the Uhana Police Division, a van travelling towards Kandy on the Ampara-Kandy Road had reportedly  lost control near the Weranketagoda Junction and collided with a three-wheeler and two motorcycles parked near a garage.

 

One of the motorcyclists had sustained serious injuries and had succumbed at the scene. He was a 39-year-old resident of the Weranketagoda area, police stated.

 

Two passengers travelling in the van were also injured and admitted to the Ampara Hospital. The driver of the van has been arrested.

 

Meanwhile, in the Nuwara Eliya Police Division, a private bus travelling along the Peradeniya- Chenkaladi Road had collided with another bus that had stopped ahead near the 75-kilometre post. The bus then had struck a pedestrian who was walking along the road.

 

The 46-year-old pedestrian, a resident of Ratnapura, sustained serious injuries and succumbed after being admitted to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital.

 

The bus driver and two female passengers also sustained minor injuries in the accident, according to police. 

 

In the Weerambugedara Police Division, two motorcycles had collided head-on in the Handagala area, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old motorcyclist. 

 

Another motorcyclist and a pillion rider were injured and admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital.

 

In another accident in the Habaraduwa Police Division, a 63-year-old cyclist has been killed after being struck by a truck in the Polduwa area.

 

The victim, a resident of Unawatuna, had sustained serious injuries and died after being admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital.

 

The truck driver has been arrested, while further investigations into all four accidents are being conducted by the respective police stations.
