The daily drinking water allocation for people affected by shortages caused by prevailing dry weather conditions has been increased from 6 litres to 15 litres per person, according to the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC).

Speaking at a media briefing today (24), NDRSC Senior Assistant Secretary Prageeth Danansooriya said water distribution to affected communities is continuing without interruption.

He said the increase was made on the instructions of the President, while funds have also been allocated to clean and restore wells and other water sources needed to support the distribution of drinking water.

Danansooriya said the required financial allocations have already been provided to the District Secretaries of affected districts to carry out the necessary work, with additional funds to be allocated as required.

He claimed that coordination of the relief measures is being carried out through the respective District Secretaries.

Accordingly, people experiencing difficulties in obtaining drinking water have been requested to inform their local Grama Niladhari (GN) officer.

This will enable the relevant Divisional Secretary to be informed and ensure that the necessary assistance is coordinated and provided to affected communities.
