The Bill related to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which has been gazetted and presented to the Parliament, has been challenged before the Supreme Court in another petition.
The petition has been filed by social media activists Iraj Weeraratne, Chamara Wijesuriya, Nandana Kuda Meegoda, Nilanth Sathsara Gamage and Milinda Rajapaksa, Ada Derana reporter said.
The petitioners claim that certain provisions of the proposed Bill violate the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of expression.
Accordingly, they have requested the Supreme Court to rule that the Bill must be approved through a referendum.
