The dry weather conditions currently affecting several provinces in Sri Lanka have impacted more than 84,000 people.
According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), a total of 84,545 people from 26,457 families across seven districts have been affected by the dry spell.
Meanwhile, operations are underway to distribute drinking water to 75,734 people from 24,144 families residing in 22 Divisional Secretariat Divisions across five districts. Residents have reported facing severe difficulties due to the prevailing weather conditions.
Despite the dry weather conditions, the Department of Meteorology has forecast rain in several areas today.
Senior Meteorologist Malith Fernando stated that showers are expected from time to time in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.
Meanwhile, following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Kukuleganga Reservoir, one of its spill gates has been opened. The engineer in charge of the Kukuleganga Hydro Power Station Reservoir stated that water is being released into the Kuda Ganga at a rate of 20 cubic metres per second.
