President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has assured that his government will not allow any form of ethnic or religious conflict to emerge in Sri Lanka again.

Addressing the National Milad-un-Nabi celebration held in Negombo today (26) to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, the President said Sri Lanka had suffered immensely as a result of prolonged communal conflicts.

He noted that everyone living in the country today has, to varying degrees, become a victim of the cruel and destructive experiences caused by such conflicts.

“I promise you that there will be no room in this country for ethnic or religious conflict from now on,” President Dissanayake said.

The President also said there had previously been a social perception that the law was enforced differently depending on a person’s wealth, power, religion or culture.

However, he said the government was already working to establish the principle that everyone is equal before the law as a fundamental part of rebuilding the country.

President Dissanayake further said the government was working to introduce a system within approximately the next year that would enable people to carry out all important transactions with the state online from their homes.

He said this would mark an important milestone in public service reform and help make the public service a more attractive profession.

The President also assured that none of the decisions or measures taken by him or his government would cause harm to the public.

Referring to the proposed constitutional reforms, he said the main objective was to accelerate the process of delivering justice to the people and, through justice, contribute to building a better society.

He stressed that although decisions would be examined from every possible perspective before being taken, the government would not reverse decisions made in the interests of the people merely because of minor opposition.
