A 17-year-old girl was killed and two other children were injured when a train collided with a car at an ungated railway crossing in the Ariviyal Nagar area of Kilinochchi.
The accident occurred when a train travelling from Mount Lavinia to Kankesanthurai struck the car as it was crossing the railway line.
Police said the 17-year-old victim, a resident of Selvanagar, died at the scene. A 9-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy who were also travelling in the car sustained injuries and were admitted to Kilinochchi Hospital.
According to police, the three injured and deceased children were siblings from the same family.
The children's father, who was driving the car, and their mother, who was also travelling in the vehicle, were not injured in the collision.
