Two associates of an alleged illicit liquor dealer have been arrested in the Kindelpitiya area while transporting a consignment of illegal liquor in a rented luxury car from Wennappuwa.

Police seized approximately 27,000 milliliters of illicit liquor, valued at around Rs. 1 million, packed in eight polythene sacks, along with the vehicle allegedly used to transport the consignment.

The suspects were arrested after police stopped and searched the suspicious vehicle in Kindelpitiya based on information received by a Police Constable attached to the Western Province Intelligence Division.

According to police, the rear seats of the vehicle had been removed to make space for the liquor sacks.

Upon interrogation, the suspects reportedly revealed that the liquor belonged to an illicit liquor dealer known as “Chala”, who allegedly operates within the Hirana Police Division.

The two suspects are residents of Galthude and Hirana in Panadura, police said.

They were produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty. The case is scheduled to be taken up again at a later date.

Bandaragama Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
