A restaurant in Jaffna has been fined Rs. 950,000 by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court for selling bottled drinking water above the stipulated maximum retail price.
The violation was uncovered during a raid conducted by inspection officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority’s (CAA) Jaffna District Office.
Accordingly, officials found that a one-liter bottle of drinking water, which had a maximum retail price of Rs. 120, was sold to a consumer for Rs. 200.
Legal action was subsequently taken against the establishment, and when the case was heard before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on August 25, the restaurant was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 950,000.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has urged consumers to check the printed price and the stipulated maximum retail price when purchasing goods. Consumers are also advised to obtain and retain a proper receipt for their purchases.
The Authority further requested the public to report any instances of goods being sold above the stipulated prices or other violations of consumer laws by contacting the Consumer Affairs Authority’s hotline on 1977 during office hours.
