A married couple was arrested today (27) after police seized a stock of heroin and ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) worth approximately Rs. 70 million during a raid conducted on a beauty salon located on Matara Railway Station Road.

The Matara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau said the raid was carried out based on information received by the Matara Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and under the supervision of the Matara Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

The 30-year-old male suspect, a resident of Welegoda in Matara, was found in possession of 2.45 kilograms of heroin and 50 grams of Ice, while his 26-year-old wife was allegedly found in possession of 6 grams of heroin at the time of the arrest.

Police also seized Rs. 625,000 in cash suspected to have been earned through drug trafficking, along with two electronic scales and four mobile phones, police said.

Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that the couple had allegedly been involved in drug trafficking for a considerable period and information has also been received that one gram of heroin was being sold for around Rs. 25,000.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (28).

Police officers attached to the Matara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau conducted the raid on the instructions of the Matara SSP.
