Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres is expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today (28), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The Met. Department said rainfall above 75 millimetres is likely at some locations, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2:00 p.m. Mainly dry weather is expected to prevail elsewhere.

Strong winds of around 40 to 50 kilometres per hour may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The general public has been advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Department also said the Sun will be directly overhead at different locations in Sri Lanka from today (28) to September 7.

Accordingly, Kokkuvil, Nallur, Kodikamam and Nagar Kovil are expected to be closest to the overhead Sun at around 12:11 p.m. today, the Met. Department noted.
