Police officers have opened fire at a van which was allegedly abducting a young woman at the checkpoint in Nawala Road, Narahenpita and have rescued the victim.

The alleged abductors have fled the scene while leaving behind the vehicle, police said.

It is reported that a police team at the Narahenpita Police Station, based on information received via the police emergency hotline this afternoon (29), ordered the vehicle in question to stop at the relevant roadblock.

However, the police officers at the checkpoint opened fire and stopped the vehicle as the it continued to drive.

At that time, the person driving the vehicle had abandoned the young woman who was being abducted and the van at that location and fled.

During the investigation conducted by the police, it has been revealed that the 26-year-old young woman in question had been abducted near the BMICH.

The police have initiated investigations to find the absconding suspect and the Cinnamon Gardens Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
