The hearing of petitions filed against the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, presented to parliament by the government, commenced for the second day today (02) before the Supreme Court.
The petitions are being heard by a five-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Sampath Abeykoon, and Gihan Kulatunga.
Currently, attorneys representing the petitioners who challenged the relevant Bill are presenting their arguments.
Following the conclusion of submissions by the petitioners’ attorneys, legal counsel representing the intervening petitioners are scheduled to present their arguments. Thereafter, the Attorney General is expected to make submissions regarding the constitutionality of the Bill.
The hearing of these petitions, which commenced last morning, continued for nearly 12 hours until 10:30 p.m.
