A private bus carrying around 40 passengers was involved in an accident after being attacked by a wild elephant on the Kataragama–Buttala Road at around 11.00 a.m. today (03).
The incident occurred near the electric fence checkpoint within the Kataragama Police Division.
The bus was travelling towards Buttala after bringing a group of pilgrims from Chilaw to Kataragama. According to reports, a wild elephant that was on the road suddenly attacked the bus.
Following the attack, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.
Around 10 passengers sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to the Kataragama Hospital for medical treatment.
Hospital sources said none of the injured passengers were in serious condition.
Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
