A pilot project has been launched to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to intercity private buses, with the aim of enhancing the safety of both passengers and drivers.

The initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake and Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena. It is coordinated by the National Council for Road Safety and implemented by the National Transport Commission.

As part of the first phase of the project, technical equipment was installed in long-distance private buses today (05) at the Bastian Mawatha Bus Station in Colombo.

Initially, the AI systems will be installed in 10 buses. Following an evaluation of their effectiveness and operational performance, plans are in place to expand the technology to other buses operating islandwide.

Rather than being used to penalize drivers, the technology will continuously monitor the interior of the bus and the driver’s actions throughout the journey.

If unsafe practices, such as driver drowsiness or fatigue, mobile phone use while driving, or failure to wear a seatbelt, are detected, warning alerts will be issued through voice messages.

The initiative aims to prevent road accidents and ensure a safer public transport service.
