Two suspects have been arrested with a large stock of heroin, a firearm and ammunition during a raid conducted in the Wellamulla area of Matara, police said.

 

A team of officers from the Gonahena Camp of the Police Special Task Force (STF) conducted the raid, yesterday (05) based on information received.

 

The suspects were arrested while allegedly transporting heroin on a motorcycle. Police had recovered 1 kilogram and 9 grams of heroin and a further 205 grams of heroin from their possession.

 

The motorcycle used by the suspects was also taken into police custody, and the suspects were subsequently handed over to the Matara Police.

 

Further investigations have revealed that the suspects, aged 24 and 25, are residents of the Matara area and are allegedly linked to other criminal activities, police said.

 

During additional investigations, police recovered a repeater-type firearm, 56 rounds of T56 ammo and 47 pistol rounds from a room where one of the suspects had been staying.

 

Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Matara Police.
