Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has warned that the proposed 22nd Amendment could pose a threat to the independence of the judiciary.
Premadasa made the remarks during a meeting held today (06) with United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Marc-André Franche.
He said the opposition’s position on the proposed amendment was based on democratic principles and was not influenced by party politics or personal interests.
“Our position is clearly beyond party politics and personal interests. It is based on what is best for democracy. We view the 22nd Amendment as a threat to judicial independence,” Premadasa said.
He emphasized that safeguarding the rule of law was essential to ensuring an independent judiciary.
“We are taking a very democratic position. Democracy must be protected by every possible means,” he added.
